Benefits of Using the Squarespace Blog to Display Your Creative Portfolio

Last week, I did a deep dive into the simplicity and effectiveness of a Squarespace website for a fashion blogger. This week, we’re switching gears and exploring some creative ways to push the limits of the Squarespace blog—and why I truly believe it’s one of the best tools for showcasing your portfolio.

Whether you’re an interior designer, artist, digital creator, or any business with a creative body of work, this approach applies to you. While the layout and functionality of the blog are intentionally simple, there are some powerful advantages to using it as your go-to portfolio tool—especially when it comes to content creation and boosting your SEO.

If you’re a creative professional, chances are you’ve spent time trying to figure out the best way to share your work online. And while there are tons of options out there, one of my favorite (and often overlooked) tools for this is the Squarespace blog. It’s not just for long-form writing—it’s actually a super versatile way to build out a portfolio that’s clean, easy to update, and simple for visitors to navigate.

Even though the blog editor still uses the classic Squarespace 7.0 builder, there are some really compelling reasons to use it to your advantage. With a web designer’s eye—and a little help from custom CSS—you can create a portfolio that’s not only beautiful but also EASY to replicate and update. Whether you're showcasing design projects, artwork, or content creations, this setup makes the process of adding new content smooth and scalable.

Here are my top 3 reasons why you should consider using the Squarespace blog to display your creative work:

1. Organized, Ongoing Content Structure

The blog format naturally supports a chronological and categorized structure, making it ideal for showcasing your work over time. Instead of a static portfolio page, you can group projects by type, theme, or medium—making it easier for visitors to browse your work and see why they should work with you.

A great example of this in action is MLA Design Group, which organizes its work into four distinct project categories. This type of structure not only makes it easy for users to browse but also gives you flexibility across the rest of your site. For instance, if you want to showcase “Featured Projects” on your homepage, you can simply tag specific posts in the blog editor. Squarespace’s summary blocks will then pull those posts onto the homepage automatically. Best of all, refreshing that content is as simple as toggling the featured tag on or off—no redesign required. Fresh content keeps your site up-to- date and engaging!

2. Built-In SEO Benefits & Shareability

Each blog post acts as its own indexed page, which gives you more opportunities to optimize for search engines. You can include keywords, alt text for images, and meta descriptions—all things that help your work get discovered online. Think of each project post as another chance to show up in someone’s Google search.

Beyond SEO, there’s also a huge opportunity for shareability. Squarespace allows you to connect your site directly to Pinterest, which means every time you publish a new blog post, it can automatically be pushed to your Pinterest boards—complete with a featured image and link back to your site.

It’s a great example of working smarter, not harder—getting your content onto two powerful search engines (Google and Pinterest) at the same time. And let’s be honest, when it comes to creative inspiration, Pinterest is still one of the first places people go. Think about where you go for creative inspiration. Pinterest is definitely at the top of my list! So why not meet your audience where they already are? This is a huge advantage for Interior Designers, Content Creators and any other business owner in a creative line of work. Myself included!

3. Easy to Customize + Replicate

Once you’ve dialed in a blog post layout you love, it’s super easy to duplicate that format for future posts. If you work with a designer, we can add custom CSS to elevate the default blog styling to something that feels custom and on-brand. You can then copy a post and update it with new content (including a new URL) without needing to circle back to your designer or developer with every new portfolio example you would like to share.

As a designer who works mainly with small business owners, it is important to me that they feel comfortable navigating their site and making these types of updates. My goal is always to set you up for long-term success—and to make sure you're getting the most out of your design investment. Of course, not everyone wants to DIY every update, and that’s totally okay too. For clients who prefer a more hands-off approach, I offer VIP days specifically for refreshing your portfolio or knocking out a list of quick updates.
